Headteacher Supervision
As a former head and trained supervisor, I offer a bespoke professional supervision service just for headteachers.
We meet regularly (monthly or half-termly). In the safe and non-judgmental space of supervision, you share aspects of your work that seem important to discuss and explore, like, for example:
-
events you've experienced
-
activities you've undertaken
-
relationships that are shifting or developing
Usually, one thing will float to the top as being most important, and we shine the light on that in our discussion. Read more about the key elements of my approach to headteacher supervision.
We engage in reflective dialogue and collaborative learning for the benefit and development of you and your school/organisation. Supervision helps you 'refill your cup', grow and learn as a leader and effectively navigate the professional challenges you face.

"Knowing I am talking to someone who has dealt with similar things is hugely beneficial.
The quality of the listening is appreciated – I really feel like I am seen and heard without judgement. The quality of empathy is very tangible."
Dominic, Headteacher
"I certainly would recommend this service to other Heads . . . You helped me hold the mirror at a different angle to allow me to consider other points of view. This has helped me to move towards improvement."
Caroline, Headteacher
The 3 elements of supervision
What's the difference between coaching and supervision for headteachers?
These are 2 different interventions, but they have a lot of similarities. Both support headteachers to grow and develop, whilst also helping them resource themselves for the job and maintain good wellbeing.
The difference are as follows, in terms of the services I provide:
Coaching is:
-
Time-limited - usually a short term intervention that helps you work towards a goal or particular outcome
-
Focused on drawing out the resourcefulness of the client. The coach isn't bringing their own experience to bear on what the client talks about.
-
Flexible - the agenda belongs to the client, and the discussion can focus more on their personal leadership issues e.g. wellbeing, if necessary, rather than on the impact on the school and stakeholders
Supervision is:
-
A regular occurrence, maybe monthly or half termly.
-
Bringing to bear the supervisor's relevant knowledge and expertise of headship , not in order to advise, but to support the partnership with the supervisee and nurture a collaborative approach e.g. 'I'm wondering if there's a risk here of . . .'
-
Led by the client's agenda, but the supervisor always hold in the background (or may bring into the foreground) the interests of the school community and stakeholders.
I've made a little video that explains the differences - you can watch it here.
If you'd prefer to explore coaching rather than supervision, please get in touch. Book in for a no-charge consultation and let's talk.
I'm pleased to be a member of CoPSiEbE, an organisation whose mission is to advocate for high quality supervision in the education sector. The community supports educators with supervision qualifications to make themselves known in the sector. Their working definition of supervision in education is as follows:
‘Supervision in education is a non-judgemental, collaborative process where education practitioners are supported to reflect on their values, practice, relationships, the emotional demands of their work and the impact of these and the wider education system on their psychological wellbeing. It can contribute to best practice, effective relationships, enhanced wellbeing, and professional and personal development.’
