Coaching to amplify your impact

Moving into executive leadership in schools and trusts

New executives tend to be hired, as you might expect, on the basis of their knowledge and expertise. But although being the expert is important in securing the role, how important actually is it in making an impact once you’re on the job? Can it become a bit of a burden? The ‘I need to have all the answers’ mindset can lead you towards self-doubt and anxiety, when actually what you need most is the ability to ask the right questions.

I’m seeing a growing emphasis in the education sector on ‘human skills’ – the ability to build strong relationships with all stakeholders and to communicate the vision and values of the organisation, holding others to their greatness.

The most successful executive teams I see are those with a growth mindset. Empowering their staff to do great work is the starting point, and they're willing to grow and develop themselves in pursuit of that.

Stepping into executive leadership is a leap of faith. As you move from leadership in one school to leading more than one, a lot changes. It’s vital to take that step out of your comfort zone with caution, but also intentionality and awareness.

How coaching helps executive leaders
Coaching is an important tool that helps you to go deeper and get more clarity on what’s really going on.

My coaching support helps you to transition into your new role with confidence, establish yourself effectively and start making an impact quickly. I’m spurred on as a coach by the important work you're doing in shaping an education sector which provides the best life chances for our nation’s children and young people.

Working with Helen has been transformational to my thought process when dealing with complex issues. I have found having the time to discuss current situations and the opportunity to talk in depth pragmatically, with someone impartial, about the impact my decisions, actions and next steps may have, has been extremely effective in further shaping my leadership skills.

‘Helen has provided coaching that is understanding, developmental and enabling. Her style has supported real personal growth in ‘holding up the mirror’ and asking deep questions. This was invaluable. I could not recommend this highly enough. If you seek effective and engaging coaching for growth – look no further!’

Andrew Clarke, Senior Education Director.

Why choose me as your coach?

I've spent over 30 years working in the education sector, including 10 years as a head. I've led both trust and LA schools and have worked as part of a trust executive team. I am currently a trustee of a large MAT in the North East which keeps me in touch with the latest developments in the sector. I'm knowledgeable about educational leadership, but I'm carrying that experience lightly. I don't allow it to get in the way of high quality coaching, which is about 'holding up the mirror' and drawing out your resourcefulness.
